Nowadays, more and more people choose to dry pasture grass to get grass hay.There are 3 points to explain the reason:

 

Moisture important

 

Moisture is important,but we need to know the moisture so we convert each ingredient to a dry matter basis. The more digestible, the faster the hay will pass through the rumen, and the more intake. And an increase in RFV means a decrease in ADF and NDF (measurements of fiber content).

 

Grass hay more fiber than pasture grass

 

Grass hay has more fiber than pasture grass. The higher fiber content lowers the RFV and intake. Furthermore, the fiber in grass hay is more digestible than fiber in grass. So it is calculated using only fiber values,even though protein certainly affects the value of hay, it is not part of the RFV calculation. Second, the RFV was designed to help rank the potential energy intake of different hays by lactating dairy cows and alfalfa is the standard.

 

Nutrient levels of feedstocks

 

So what were the nutrient levels of the different baled feedstocks? 

Corn stalks were around eight percent moisture, four to six percent crude protein and 56 to 58 percent TDN. 

Wheat straw was 10 percent moisture, four to five percent crude protein, and 40 to 45 percent TDN. These values were in line for these baled crop residues and make excellent and cheap feedstock to meet the rumen’s scratch factor.

Thus it can be seen, grass hay is of more value than wet grass. We have the specialized pasture grass rotary dryer to dry it. The grass after drying has the following advantages:

1, Long-term storage: Forage and other plants are relatively high water content, after harvesting needs to be dry treatment as soon as possible. When the forage is stacked for a long time, there will be blackening and mildew. After drying the forage can be stored for a long time, there will be no more mildew situation.
2, Nutritious & delicate: After drying, the grass still keep fresh flavour and nutrients.
3, Easy for transportation: After drying, the basic form the forage has been stable, and then processed, is suitable for long-distance transportation, handling, can be used as a good reserve type of feed.
4, Other functions: After drying, the forage can be used as a basal fertilizer culture material.
